August freight volume slipped, BTS reports

BTS reports August freight volume down 0.4% from July and 3.0% from a year earlier; this is a volume index, not a rate quote.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported October 14 that its Freight Transportation Services Index declined 0.4% in August from July and 3.0% from a year earlier. The measure covers several for-hire freight modes, including trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight. It excludes private trucking. These statistics can be revised.

What it means for operators

HaulPress takeaway: this is an August volume reading, not an October spot-rate quote. Use it for broader context, then check current conditions on the lanes you actually run before deciding what freight to pursue.
